I have some of these in my small collection, it seems that years ago, it was difficult to find much 7,62mm ball. The FN FAL, M1
rifles rebarreled to 7,62mm plus bolt action conversions were available but not a lot of 7,62mm (unless you bought commercial)358723587335874

Someone converted Israeli 7,92x57 to 7,62x51 and was selling it (photos) last photo shows a converted case and original 7,62 NATO cartridge

While on the same subject, also have seen 7,62x45mm converted to 7,62x39 Soviet too

Interesting. Hard to imagine time when 7.62NATO would be a hard round to find.

Perhaps when Israel was under a embargo and they needed some 7.62X51 ammo?

"...Israel was under a embargo..." Never happened while there was an Israel. Israel was established by the UN in 1948. No such thing as a 7.62 x 51 until 1954(not adopted by the U.S. until 1957, then promptly jammed down NATO's throat) or an Israeli 7.62NATO Mauser until the late 50's(1958ish).
A 1955 vintage 8mm may have been converted by 'just some guy' with not enough to do. Not likely to be IDF though. Not worth the effort.
