Probably did happen . . . After-all, didn't George C. Scott shoot down a German fighter with a .380 Colt auto in the movie, "Patton"!

What is even more amazing is that the bullets from the strafing plane go between Patton's legs, but miraculously he is not hit.

Regarding Patton: Aside from the movie, I recall reading a line from a biography of him that told that story. Now 67, the 7th or 8th grade was a long time ago, but the quote went something like this: "That goddam German almost shot my balls off!" Of course, not having been there, I wouldn't know what actually happened.
