A very nice rifle - couple of thousand lower than mine, in similar condition.

In case you haven't checked values recently, you are looking at somewhere between $2,000 and $2,500 retail to a serious collector. Don't know if you shoot it or not, but I would advise against it, due to possible accidental damage, and just plain wear and tear. Once the fine edge that separates a 95+% rifle from the "almosts" is lost, you cannot get it back. There are many hundreds of fine shooters available at less than $750.

Rifles from that particular era, which were in storage when the rod-bayonet model was being issued, seldom have an SRS history, since many of them were never issued, but I will look later today, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

My M1884 serial number is also a couple thousand higher than yours and is also in pristine condition. I do shoot mine with black powder loads (reloads), but, only about 10 rounds or so per year.

I don't think that it is a bad thing to shoot these a few times a year as long as you use lead bullets at lower velocities. I also have a H&R officers model that I shoot regularly. Installed a 1879 rear sight which made a it much better to get on target more consistently. The tang sight in my opinion is only nice to look at , not a great one to look down. Love the history of all the older firearms..if they could only talk! Thanks again to all of you.

I thought I had it's twin here in Maine....498397. Mine is in excellent condition but the case hardening is nowhere as near as that vivid. The color on mine is nice but not like that.

if Anyone can check 498397 for me, thanks in advance.
