So I got myself a Christmas gift.
Pietta replica Remington 1858 revolver. And, when "dry firing", the hammer drops back to half cock some of the time. And then "locks up the action". It is a bear to release and continue trying to work the action.
Any suggestions?
Any one have the same problem?
Cabela's wants me to send it back for "evaluation".
Seems Pietta does not have a U.S. office for this purpose.

Thanks, Paul

Sounds like the cylinder arm/spring is not made correctly. Had this issue once on a repro part. Had to file till it worked. If its new send it back. Also the screw on the Hammer spring in the handle may be loose. If you have an adjustment screw you can try that. Rick B

Screw is #32 in this picture. #7 is the Cylinder arm/spring I mentioned also. Rick B

Rickb, gotcha on send it back.
[at my expense]
Thought that my large hand and finger within the trigger guard may have something to do with it.
But...I'll send it back..."for evaluation".
Thanks

You might want to ask Cabela to swap for a Uberti brand.

major, now there is a thought!
Had a contact active in the SASS, one "Captain Baylor" who suggested that Cabela's got the bottom of the pile.
It is going back. Uberti have a better reputation?
Tis' a thought.

Uberti is high end quality. This is my last one I bought in 357 magnum. Am looking at their Black powders now. Rick B

Uberti has a great reputation and nice looking pistols. I have 2, a Colt 1860 Army and a 1858 Remington Army. Both are flawless and shoot good. I made solid oak presentation boxes for both.

Black power guns should never be dry fired, bangs up the nipples! I believe some plastic caps (or something) are sold to prevent that .

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER DRY FIRE A PERCUSSION ARM. That messes up the nipples.

Send the Remmie back to Cabellas because they have fabulous customer service and will replace it. When you get the new one, never dry fire it.

If you have large hands, consider getting the Remmie Revolver Dixie Gun Works sells, a Pietta Remmie with the Oversize Frame and Grips:

I have owned several Pietta revolvers and their quality has always been excellent. If I am not mistaken, Uberti is now owned by Beretta. Their quality is always excellent.

Matter of fact, the Pietta "Shooter's Revolver" (a different model than the model with the Oversize Frame and Grips) is the highest quality replica arm I have ever owned. It is a "Clone" of the original Remmie right down to the parts being interchangeable with the parts of original Remmies.

I have several cap & ball revolvers, both Pietta and Uberti. As with any firearm purchase, I always completely disassemble and clean them. There is often residual machining crud remaining inside that needs removal. A couple of Piettas I bought needed some Dremel work to remove a small tab on a stamped part & also some polishing. They are all very smooth running now.

Before sending it back, disassemble it and see where any parts may be hanging up. Sometimes only cleaning is needed and is easier than paying for return and waiting for replacement.
