Is there any way to date a model 11 from the serial number? It does not have the original barrel as it went through a rebuild at SAA. Is there a way to use the serial number to date the receiver? I don't have the exact serial as I type this but IIRC it is in the 480,000 range which should put it around 41 or 42?
Thanks,
Dave

It's likely a 1943 gun. The date code on the barrel (2 or 3 letters) might give you a time frame when it was made.

Thanks for the comments. I got the serial number, 482357. The barrel number does not match the serial and the barrel code is BL which puts the barrel at January 42. It's a 26" full choke. The stock has the FJA and ordnance wheel and also a SAA rebuild stamp. It has the Sportsman front end. I am wondering if it was rebuilt by SAA to this configuration. I recently picked up another model 11, this one is an original Riot gun with all matching numbers, barrel code dates that one as July 43 with a serial 496xxx . With that one being 1943, I was thinking the other one must be 41 or 42 with a serial that's 14K earlier?

I have 463324 made in 42.

Does this one have the original matching barrel?
Thanks.
I'll get some pics posted of these in the next few weeks. Been real busy this month and barely get free time until the evenings for some forum browsing/reading.

The Model 11s I have data on in the 480,xxx serial number range have barrels dated around March or April 1943.

463324 is a matching numbers model 11. Yours is most likely a 43.

Sorry for the late reply, but I happen to own a Remington Model 11 "Military Finish" model with serial number 482114. The serials are all matching (receiver, barrel, tang) and it has barrel code "AM" which corresponds to March (A) 1943 (M). During that period, Model 11 production was pretty steady around 2200 to 2500 units per month, which presumably was their maximum capacity. On that basis, I would bet that your shotgun (482357) was made within a few days of mine.

Here is a link to a copy of the handwritten records for Model 11 serials and dates on the Remington Society's website http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/FR09 and the Decoder Ring for barrel dates http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes Unfortunately there is a gap in the records from Jun 30 1942 (469363) through Aug 1 1943 (499999) which corresponds to a big block of military orders, hence some extrapolation would be needed if it weren't for the barrel date.
