If you owned a 95% condition original WWII model 1897 Trench Gun with a thumbnail size chip missing from the butt plate would you leave it as is or try to replace the plate with a correct 95% condition piece? Are correct buttplates for these hard to find? Thanks

Might be a bit hard to find a replacement. But they do show up once in a while. The problem may be how it fits because they were sanded at the factory to perfectly fit each stock. Replacements are sometimes easy to spot because they are either too small or they overhang the buttstock. The Military usually used metal buttplates as replacements.
