Horst Faas was a remarkably gifted photographer and accompanied our brigade(173rd Airborne Brigade) on many missions in VN. Photo #16 appeared in a number of news publications at the time. The medic on the left in the picture was Gerry Levy who arrived on Okinawa in early 1964 with me - both of us right out of jump school. We were deployed in very early May of '65 to VN and Gerry tragically was KIA on an operation in the Plain of Reeds in early January of '66. The photo incorrectly states that he is from NY - he was from CT and his father was a physician there.

Photo #41 was also of a guy that I knew - James Duro was the "old guy" in our platoon. Most of us were in the 19-21 year old age range and "King James" as we called him was in his early thirties and came down from Okinawa with us. He was a Sp. 4 until he went on a day pass into Saigon and had too much fun and came back a little too late and was reduced in rank. He also re-upped for 6 years while we were out in War Zone D in the summer of '65 and they flew in some photographers and conducted a publicity ceremony out there in the jungle wastelands of his re-enlistment.

Thanks for the link - I've seen some but not all of the photos elsewhere. The photos of South Vietnamese soldiers with the Garands are particularly interesting.

173rd thanks for your service. My father served in the 9th in 69 in the plain of reeds area. Its neat to see someone else talk about it.

Thank you for posting the great link. Haven't seen anybody I remember, yet, but I'll look again. Some familiar landscape in there.

My B.inL. was in the 173rd. He called it Westmorelands (sp?) 'fire brigade'. I think it was in 67, he was in a big battle on some numbered hill. Went up a private 1st., came down a Sargent. Stayed in 29 years, retired CSM. Lives in GA near Bragg. Was A.B. the whole time. Rides with the V.N. Combat Vets.
