I went to the range today to sight in the hunting rifles. I took along the '98 rifle I bought this summer. hings have been hectic & this is the first time I shot it. All I had was my 220 gr. hunting loads and I was prepared for a keyholing, spread out mess of a group. Here's what I got at 50 yds:

23875

That is a 2" bull. Later I did shoot 5 at 100 yds. but my glasses were fogging up pretty good in the rain and damp. It was a hand-sized group, but no tumblers. But I'm thinking this rifle will shoot jacketed bullets just fine. Not only is the bore peachy, it is probably close to.308".

Actually, this US Krag may be more accurate thaN MY "carbine" with its re-cut Model 70 barrel.

Rifle looks like mine. Good shooting. I am able to get 1.25 at 60 yds with Rem CoreLokts. The sights are simple as can be-I may run a box through just to get used to the picture. Do you hunt with open sighted versions of the Krag?

I hunted with my 1898 sporter for years. I no longer hunt, but I would still have no problem hunting with the open sights.

Most just use the open sights, but you'll also find scoped Krag rifles.

Guys,

Thanks for the compliments on the new rifle. Pete, I have a Lyman/redfield peep sight on my "carbine" - I shoot better with the "poor man's scope."

My daughter got a msg to me up at our camp I should come down for my granddaughter's "dedication" ceremnoy. What they do in her church instead of infant baptism. So I got to a computer. I'll go back up soon as the doings are over tomorrow. Warm, sunny weather for the next week. perfect for hunters, lousy for hunting!

later!
