I was just gifted an 1873 carbine by an uncle. This is my first trapdoor and I'm tickled he entrusted it to me. It is in average condition but is still special to me due to the family tie. Serial number is 126568. Any hits on that number? Thanks for any input. Also, if my research is correct, looks like 1880 mfg date. Correct?

No direct hit but surrounded by 5th. cav. and scout carbines.

Hey Tom, thanks for the reply. The Uncle I got it from lives in western Montana. If you don't mind, does your data indicate where they were stationed and dates? By scouts, would that mean Indian scouts? The reason I ask is that this one has a bunch of brads nailed into the side of the stock. Lastly, the last digit is pretty worn but it looks like an 8. Just in case it is a 3, could you tell me if that one is listed please? I'm going to attempt loading a few pics for reference. Thanks again.

I appreciate the input I've received so far on this rifle and wonder if anyone might be able to give me an idea of what it may be worth. I don't intend to sell, only want to put a value on it for my collection. Here's a few pics to give you an idea on condition. Bore is pretty decent....looks better than the chamber area. :)

I'd probably put value in the $1500-$2000 range, and would not insure it for anything less than the latter. Plenty of wear, but appears to be a real carbine, which is no small plus.
