I know this is "technically" the wrong forum for this, but I thought I'd report on a Krag bayonet I picked up a week or two ago. I know that pre-1898 bayonets are not exactly rare, but they are somewhat uncommon. I got this from a guy on the CMP forum.

As I proved with the 1899 carbine, I'm not adverse to a deal. This bayonet had been in an attic or closet for some time. The outside of the scabbard and the metal (crosspiece, etc.) has what appears to be fine pitting on it. I used a copper brush and some of it appeared to come off. The original finish still appears to be present.

The blade is virtually intact, as you can see from the photos. The wood is also in excellent condition. Price was $100 shipped. I was glad to get one made before 1898 - it goes well with my 1892/96 and 1896 rifles. The barrel hole had some corrosion, but the afore-mentioned copper brush and some Breakfree made that all good.

Obviously never out of the scabbard. 1896 is the toughest date to find.
