I picked up a Type 38 rifle, missing mum, dust cover and sling, what is unusual is there are markings on the stock and markings on the inside of the sling.
It is a no series Tokyo Kokura, Any ideas on what they are ?

Sling is almost certainly a unit mark, Lots of numbers in what I can make out. Stock could be a school mark.

Stock "brand" looks more Chinese to me. Jap's did not burn marks on their stocks as far as I know. Import mark on it?, many jap rifles imported from China in the 90's. I agree the sling marks look jap but is it original jap sling?

The Japanese most certainly did burn markings into their stocks. It was almost exclusively done with school or training rifles though. The mark on the stock looks like a dogtag but they used the same style tags for other items as well. It could very well be Chinese. But, the older Kanji often looked Chinese and the word Kanji actually means "Chinese characters".

There are no import marks, I have not removed the stock, just a external inspection so far.
The sling appears to be a original, if it is original to the rifle, hard to say, it was installed backwards when I got it.
Any idea what the marking say ?

I may be off my rocker here... but it looks to me like the markings on the receiver have been partially obliterated along with the Mum.

I think it is just faint with some wear. Not uncommon and may be partially due to the photo.

My wife, a Japanese speaker says the sling markings, read right to left in the picture looks like the numbers 3870. She agrees that the wood stamping is Chinese.

would it be possible that the mum was filed down then the area refinished ? The marking appear to be worn down, no machining marks. I have some more photos I'll get up loaded.

Unless she is in her 80s there is little chance she can read more than the most basic Kanji from pre 1946, That does not though mean the stock mark isn't Chinese. There are plenty of reasonable ways for the Chinese to have marked this stock.
