View Full Version : Need help identifying a stock ....

We found this stock in the crawl space, above a closet in my uncles house. Other than cleaning decades of dust off it, I have done nothing else to it. It appears to be unused, unmarked and unfinished. Any insight into what it is would be greatly appreciated!

The stock is for a M1903 Springfield rifle. It was made as a replacement during WWII. It is called a "Scant" due to the fact that it is similiar to a full-pistol grip-type stock, except the bottom was cut off. Supposedly, these came from WWI stores of stock blanks that were not shaped "deep" enough to have the full pistol grip of a Type C stock.

Look carefully in the recess on the left side of the stock just above the stock bolt - is there an S or a K stamped there?

I could find nothing stamped in that recess, even looking under magnification. Is there any value in a stock like this?

Yes, especially as "shooter" stocks - maybe in the $125-150 range, depending on condition.

I notice the relief for the recoil lug is scalloped. Has it been relieved for a 1903A3 handguard ring?

looked close at the pics,..doesnt look to be a 1903A3 stock..the square cut for the cutoff switch is common of a ABB stock

Mike, no relief cut that I can see, definetly for a Springfield. It has been drilled for the bayonet mount screw which normally you don't see on an unused replacement stock so it must have been fitted for hardware at some point. I wasn't aware that ABB made anything but the 03/A3 stocks but what the heck... Are the butt plate screw and rear swivel holes threaded or just drilled?

The holes for the bayonet mount screw, the butt plate screws and rear swivel screws are drilled, but not threaded.

years ago, i had 2 boxes of 3 stocks just like that..one box had 1903 stocks, and was marked 1903A1, and the other was cut for the 1903A3 , and was marked as such..

Your stock is a WW2 production Milton Bradley, I'm pretty sure. If you could post a closer picture like your 3rd photo, taken from above, of the area around the mag cut off recess, I can confirm.
AB&B are very similar, but the band retaining spring cut is like a router cut, similar to Smith Corona, unlike what yours has. Keystone, Springfield and Milton Bradley all had a similar spring cut.
I've had NOS (unopened) boxes of all and did a side by side comparison of them.

Another note, Keystone marks are often very hard to see (the upside down K), but the angular side cuts and flatter bottom to the cutoff relief, rule the Keystone out.
