What you are looking at are four Marines from the 25th Marines at the end of the battle. Its interesting to see the different uniforms they have on. One wears camo's, another Army HBT's. The second Marine from the right is my uncle. The flag hung in his basment until he passed away. It now hangs in his son's house.

Geez, what kind of thoughts are these men having?

Horrified by what they just went through?

Absolute joy at having survived?

Dread that the war continues and they expect to be repeating everything they just survived?

Holy crap this volcanic piece of crap island sucks!

Great photo!, Thanks for posting it. Ever notice how the fighting men in the photos look the same through time? The period is defined by props, maybe a slight change in uniform style, maybe you go from black and white to color. Honor and courage are timeless.

Are you certain the photo was taken on Iwo Jima? The terrain doesn't look like Iwo.

The one fellow with the facial hair is probably a Navy Corpsman. If you notice the how low the pocket's are on his utility top. Typical of Navy issue. The Navy also had a 3 pocket top similar to the Marine issue with different buttons, some were stencilled USN and some were unmarked.

Are you sure that this wasn't possibly Okinawa ? Great pic. Thanks for sharing.

Op states its from 25th Marines, the last battle in WW2 they fought in was Iwo. They did not go to Okinawa. They also fought of Kwajelein and Saipan, but the terrain on Iwo was not all sand and bare there were trees until the bombing started. That pic could be from the northern part of the Island where arty and airpower was largely not used due to all the ravines and cuts.
