View Full Version : Need decoration ID for WWII 101'st doctor

A friend of mine was given his grandfather's decoration board. I think we have it all identified except the three in the lower left corner, the multi colored one with stars and oak leaf, the sheild, and the red with black pin stripes. He was with the division hospital captured at Bastogne.

The shield is from the 321'st field artillery.

The multicolored ribbon with the stars and oak leaf is the Europe-Africa-Mid East Campaign Medal. The two stars would indicate two separate champaigns with in that Theater of Ops. The Oak Leak cluster indicates a second issue of the Medal.Look as I might through the Medals of America cataloge <medalsofamerica.com>I found no reference to the red ribben with the black pinstripes. Might it be a foreign award[French or Belgium] perhaps? Nick

Thanks Major! I think the bottom left is "Croix De Guerre Belguim". On further study the Europe-Africa-Mid East Campaign Medal has an arrowhead for amphibious or airborne campaign. The Doc saw some stuff. He died in 1977.

The Belgian Croix De Guerre ribbon is red with green strips. Mind you, the strips might have gone black over time or the ribbon is just dirty.

RE: The ETO ribbon, there were no seecond awards of campaign ribbons I'll bet its an arrowhead indicatiing an assault landing in the case of 101st the jump into Normandy or landing on the beach. ( some DID land versus jump). Hope this helps Steve McG

That "oak leaf" is not even similar to the current one. Better pics with more light might help. Sunlight is best. I am betting it's an arrowhead as an oakleaf just wouldn't make since.

I have my dad's 506th stuff.

His wings have 2 stars and an arrowhead device.
Instead of the belgian ribbon there is a green and red "forriaguerre."
Also an Orange cord awarded by the Dutch.

Your guy appears to have a glider badge.
Sounds like he had quite a time.
