When I first got my M1-D from the DCM, I noticed the front site was filed down. I first thought about finding a new one to replace it, but after careful thought, I decided to try and find out which branch of service did this and what time period was it done. I have asked several folks I consider experts on garands, but have yet to find out answers to those two questions. Can anyone help?
Thank you for readiing and special thanks to anyone who knows the answers.

SWAG - someone wanted it as a backup. With zero elevation see what the zero (yards) it's set for. I'm thinking 300.

It was probably done a SA look for a stake mark across the gas cyl. and sight looks like a chisel mark to mark the windage position. If the rifle would not zero at 200 with the sight bottomed out you would have to shorten the front sight. I believe these rifles were targeted. I have seen other M1D's with shortened front sights that came from DCM. This is my opinion based on observations.
