I have no interest in the scope other than it looks like the real deal and is not totally over priced not cheap but if needed to complete a rifle not bad.

Why would the mounts have that much finish wear on them, but the tube is almost %100 finish?....I have many older Unertls, and some with the black "sniper mounts", like this one...they all have pretty much the same wear on both the scope & mounts...Just a curious observation, and not a slam on the scope....it is awesome...

This one has the green mounts and they look 95% at least. When were the black mounts used I mean in what s/n range? I have seen a few but most I have seen have the green anodized mounts.

I didn't realize any of the USMC Unertls had a dot reticle.

Mine does and I have read that was the original reticule pattern. The dot is barely larger than the center of the crosshair. I think I read that in Seniche's USMC Sniper book.

Senich's book states the mounts were all "Duraluminum" and black anodized. One of the by products of worn anodization is a faded green look. Not an expert, but I don't think Unertl ever made green mounts....Senich's book also states the Unertl USMC sniper scopes had "medium crosswire with center dot".....Thats news to me, but its in the book....(actually the USMC Unertl operators manual..

I have 3 Unertl USMC 8X's, one has the dot 2 do not, one of the non dot 's was rebuilt by Jonh Unertl himself for me in the mid 80's. So what is correct? probably both.

The Unertl 10X USMC scopes shown all the early manuals are very different than the issue rank and file. Also, the 10X's had the foot ball dots at first and ended with all round dots.

You are right about the anodizing, it was soft coat and old so the dyes were very sensitive to ultra violet light and break down into purple or green depending on the dye and how deep the anodizing went.

I do not think the green color is due to fading or wear I think it may have been just a process change that caused a diferent color in the finish I have seen at least a dozen Unertl USMC 8X scopes with the same color mounts as mine and the one in the auction. I have always thought that color was the norm from my experience from the scopes I have seen. But I have heard of the Black mount scopes and have seen pics on the internet and they did not look anodized but very well could have been.

Also, I believe the black anodized "sniper" mounts weren't proprietary to the 8x USMC scopes, ....I picked up an original, but a bit worn, 10x Unertl that has those black mounts, faded to grey/green. The scope is non-military and was sitting on a table at a southern NY gun show on a Sunday afternoon..the fellow took $300 cash for it...Another fellow I know has a commercial Unertl 10x or 12x with those black mounts, as well....I have to look at my other Unertl mounts, but I think the black mounts are a slightly different configuration than the standard comm. mounts...I'll try and get a pic up.....

Just curious how high it was I have not seen the green mounts on later scopes most seem to be white aluminum. I have seen just the green mounts sell for 900.00

The ebay scope went for $5150.00 by the way

good to know, thanks...With my luck, I'll sell the sniper mounts, then next week, come across a nice USMC scope with no mounts....LOL
